NEWPORT, R.I. — August 26, 2026 — Newport Police have identified 27-year-old Brendan Norris of Newport as the suspect involved in Wednesday morning’s officer-involved shooting, according to an update from the City of Newport.
The Newport Police Department, Rhode Island State Police and the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Newport officer who was shot during the confrontation has since been released from the hospital and is recovering at home. Authorities have not indicated that the officer’s injuries are life-threatening.
Police also confirmed that all officers who discharged their firearms during the incident have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation proceeds. Authorities described the leave as standard protocol following an officer-involved shooting.
Investigation Into Brendan Norris

The stolen vessel was described as a 1968 Hinckley Bermuda 40-foot sailboat.
Following the identification of Norris in Newport, questions have emerged about whether the man shown in the New Jersey State Police photographs is the same individual. However, that connection should be treated cautiously unless formally confirmed by investigators.
Reported Marine Background
Information circulating about Norris also describes a substantial background in the marine industry. An online professional profile reportedly belonging to a Brendan Norris from Newport described experience working aboard boats and pursuing employment in the yachting industry.
The profile reportedly stated that Norris had worked as a captain of a 40-foot mooring boat in Newport and as a chief engineer aboard a 65-foot vessel on weekends.
It also described extensive sailing experience, including nearly 5,000 nautical miles of solo sailing, as well as marine-related training and certifications.
However, the professional profile has not been confirmed by police as belonging to the suspect. Authorities have not publicly verified the information contained in that profile.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged boat theft and Wednesday’s shooting remain under investigation. Authorities are expected to review evidence from both Rhode Island and New Jersey as they work to establish a complete timeline.
